This impact short uses a combination of two materials to protect your tailbone:
D3O® RF (Recycled Foam): This is a smart material that stays soft and flexible while you move, but hardens in a fraction of a second the moment you fall on it. ESPRO™ Shield: This is a flexible, plastic-like shell that sits right over the D3O padding. It absorbs the first hard blow and spreads out the impact force.
This combination carries an official European safety rating (EN 1621-1 Level 1), proving this snowboard/ski impact short keeps you safe from heavy impacts. Can I also use these shorts for inline skating and skateboarding? Yes, absolutely. The protection works just as well on asphalt as it does in the snow. Because the shorts are so thin, they fit easily under regular jeans or skate pants.
What is the difference between the protection on the tailbone and on the hips? The tailbone shield (D3O) is built for those really hard hits when you fall backward. The softer foam on the hips and thighs is meant for comfort and preventing bruises from light slides.
How do I wash the shorts? If possible, remove the protective inserts. Machine wash the shorts on a cold, delicate/hand-wash cycle. Do not use fabric softener and never put them in the dryer, as the heat damages the elastic and any glue bonds. Just let them air-dry on a rack.
